Mishna Accomplished
Join Rabba Aliza Libman Baronofsky to study two mishnas per day. You'll hear about how Rabba Aliza learned all of the six orders of the mishna with each of her children in advance of their bnai mitzvah, two mishnas at a time.
Mishna Accomplished begins on Sunday, April 19 with the first two mishnayot of tractate Rosh Hashana. New episodes will be published three times per week through Shavuot 5786.

The mishna tells us about the ending of the service, where the Kohen Gadol puts on his white clothing again to go back into the Kodesh Kodashim to retrieve the ladle and the fire-shovel. He puts the golden clothing on and finishes the afternoon service. We then see him change back into his street clothes and is accompanied home for a post-fast celebration that he made it through the service successfully. In our final mishna, we at least see a detailed list of the Kohen Gadol’s garments. We discussed a number of the topics in today’s episode in S3E10 and S3E11, so I’m linking to them here for quick access. You can find today’s mishnas on Sefaria here.

Sarah Osborne joins me on the podcast today as we discuss the five prohibited activities of Yom Kippur and minimum amounts for legal liability as well as some exceptions for a king and a bride. You can find these mishnas here. Sarah tells us about her work with A Mitzvah to Eat, and we talk about choosing our words carefully to make it clear that people who can safely fast are commanded to fast, but people who cannot safely fast have a mitzvah to eat. Tune in Sunday for the second part in this series.

Shira Eliaser joins me as we continue to talk about life-threatening situations that override existing Jewish laws. We also move into cases of doubt, focusing specifically on a rockslide or building collapse. What do we need to know about who is trapped under the rubble in order to violate Shabbat laws to clear it away? This is one of those challenging mishnas that should not be read without some added context. You can find these mishnas here. Shira also tells us about some of her creative Torah projects. You can learn about her work at Eliaser.Net, Shira Eliaser, Author at The Lehrhaus, and https://voices.sefaria.org/profile/shira-eliaser?tab=collections.

Today we start our new tractate, Shabbat! I explain why I chose Shabbat and some of the considerations when picking a longer tractate. I talk about how we want to frame our learning about Shabbat and how the mishna’s focus on “don’t” creates an imperative for us to add elements to remind ourselves of the joys of Shabbat. We learn the first mishna, about transferring, and I heavily recommend simplifying the first sentence. The second mishna starts where we might expect Shabbat to start: On Friday afternoon, thinking about what things we should not start if we might not be able to finish them. You can find these mishnas here.

In today’s episode, we discuss decrees the rabbis made to keep people from absent-mindedly violating other prohibitions, such as carrying work tools on Shabbat. We are introduced to the idea of “Bo Bayom”, a day where the student of Shammai outnumbered the students of Hillel and made 18 laws in the beit midrash. You can find these mishnas here.

Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel continue their fundamental disagreement about what you can do Friday afternoon by discussing when you have to stop engaging in business with non-Jews on Shabbat. Beit Shammai say you have to finish with them early enough that they can complete the melacha before Shabbat. Beit Hillel says you just have to finish with them before Shabbat. You can find these mishnas here. Aside from the teaser, this is our shortest episode yet!

My brother Avi joins me today as we discuss the household of Rabban Gamliel’s laundry habits and try to figure out whether Beit Shammai won over Beit Hillel or the other way around when it comes to starting something before Shabbat that will keep ‘working’ on its own over Shabbat.
